Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

Algebra, Geometry, and AI: Russian and Vietnamese Mathematicians Discuss Current Research
A delegation of scientists from Hanoi visited the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and then took part in a Russian-Vietnamese conference in St Petersburg. The events were part of the three-year project ‘Flexibility and Computational Methods.’ Over the course of the project, the researchers have prepared joint publications and obtained new mathematical results.

When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

DSCA-HLAII: A dual-stream cross-attention model for predicting peptide–HLA class II interaction and presentation
Shaitan A., Ke Y., Hongjun Y. et al., PLoS Computational Biology 2026 Article e1013836
The interaction between peptides and human leukocyte antigen class II (HLA-II) molecules plays a pivotal role in adaptive immune responses, as HLA-II mediates the recognition of exogenous antigens and initiates T cell activation through peptide presentation. Accurate prediction of peptide-HLA-II binding serves as a cornerstone for deciphering cellular immune responses, and is essential for guiding the optimization of antibody therapeutics. ...

Structural Analysis and Activity Correlation of Amphiphilic Cyclic Antimicrobial Peptides Derived from the [W4R4] Scaffold
El-Mowafi S. A., Konshina A. G., Mohammed E. H. et al., Molecules 2023 Vol. 28 No. 24 Article 8049
In our ongoing quest to design effective antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), this study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms governing cyclic amphiphilic AMPs and their interactions with membranes. The objective was to discern the nature of these interactions and understand how peptide sequence and structure influence antimicrobial activity. We introduced modifications into the established cyclic AMP peptide, ...

Prospects of Application of Ultramicroelectrode Ensembles for Voltammetric Determination of Compounds with Close Standard Electrode Potentials and Different Diffusion Coefficients
Arbenin A., Petrov A., Nazarov D. et al., Chemosensors 2022 Vol. 10 No. 10 Article 433
The spherical diffusion that occurs when using ultramicroelectrodes (i.e., electrodes with a characteristic size of 1–10 µm) contributes to a higher mass transfer rate. This leads to equalization of the depletion rates of the near-electrode layer due to the electrochemical reaction and to the supply of the product from the solution depth. This is the ...
