HSE Researchers Compile Scientific Database for Studying Childrens Eating Habits
The database created at HSE University can serve as a foundation for studying children’s eating habits. This is outlined in the study ‘The Influence of Age, Gender, and Social-Role Factors on Children’s Compliance with Age-Based Nutritional Norms: An Experimental Study Using the Dish-I-Wish Web Application.’ The work has been carried out as part of the HSE Basic Research Programme and was presented at the XXVI April International Academic Conference named after Evgeny Yasin.

New Foresight Centre Study Identifies the Most Destructive Global Trends for Humankind
A team of researchers from the HSE International Research and Educational Foresight Centre has examined how global trends affect the quality of human life—from life expectancy to professional fulfilment. The findings of the study titled ‘Human Capital Transformation under the Influence of Global Trends’ were published in Foresight.

Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Optimization of Gas Permeability in PDMS Microfluidic Chips for Organ-on-Chip Modeling
I. A. Khaustov, Yu. A. Safronova, O. E. Chebotareva et al., Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology 2025 Vol. 61 No. 9 P. 1753–1759
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) remains one of the most popular materials for microfluidic chips, but its high gas permeability can lead to the formation of gas bubbles in microchannels, which hampers the reproducibility of experiments in organ-on-a-chip systems. The dependence of the gas permeability of PDMS on the ratio of base to hardener (2.5 : 1, 5 : 1, and ...

Placenta-on-a-Chip Microfluidic Model: Optimization of Perfusion Conditions
S. Yu. Paul, Yu. A. Safronova, O. E. Chebotareva et al., Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology 2025 Vol. 61 No. 7 P. 1369–1378
The design and development of a placenta-on-a-chip model is of great importance for various fields of cell biology, especially in studies of the molecular mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and the action of potential drugs. Currently, milling technique is most commonly used to fabricate microfluidic devices from thermoplastics. However, this technology leads to the formation of ...

Platforms for the Search for New Antimicrobial Agents Using In Vivo C. elegans Models
Kalganova A., I. E. Eliseev, Smirnov I. et al., Acta Naturae 2024 Vol. 16 No. 4 P. 15–26
Despite the achievements brought about by high-throughput screening technologies, there is still a lack of effective platforms to be used to search for new antimicrobial drugs. The antimicrobial activity of compounds continues, for the most part, to be assessed mainly using in vitro pathogen cultures, a situation which does not make easy a detailed investigation of the ...

Creation of Recombinant Biocontrol Agents by Genetic Programming of Yeast
Pipiya S., Mirzoeva N., Baranova M. et al., Acta Naturae 2023 Vol. 15 No. 1 P. 74–80
Bacterial infections caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens pose an extremely serious and elusive problem in healthcare. The discovery and targeted creation of new antibiotics are today among the most important public health issues. Antibiotics based on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are of particular interest due to their genetically encoded nature. A distinct advantage of most AMPs is ...

Endocytosis and Transcytosis of SARS-CoV-2 Across the Intestinal Epithelium and Other Tissue Barriers
Knyazev E., Nersisyan S., Tonevitsky A., Frontiers in Immunology 2021 Vol. 12 Article 636966
Since 2003, the world has been confronted with three new betacoronaviruses that cause human respiratory infections: SARS-CoV, which causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), MERS-CoV, which causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and SARS-CoV-2, which causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The mechanisms of coronavirus transmission and dissemination in the human body determine the diagnostic and ...

Microfluidic System Protocols for Integrated On-Chip Communications and Cooling
Wirdatmadja S., Moltchanov D., Balasubramaniam S. et al., IEEE Access 2017 Vol. 5 P. 2417–2429
The advancements in multi-core central processing units have attracted new designs ranging from mechanisms of packing higher number of transistors into the small space, new techniques for communications (e.g., wireless network on chips), or new methodologies for cooling the chip. The latter two design aspects are the focus of this paper, where a microfluidic system ...
