‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

EXiO-A brain-controlled lower limb exoskeleton for rhesus macaques

IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering. 2017. Vol. 25. No. 2. P. 131–141.
Lebedev M., Vouga T., Zhuang K., Olivier J., Nicolelis M. A., Bouri M., Bleuler H.

Recent advances in the field of brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) have demonstrated enormous potential to shape the future of rehabilitation and prosthetic devices. Here, a lower-limb exoskeletoncontrolled by the intracortical activity of an awake behaving rhesus macaque is presented as a proof-of-concept for a locomotor BMI. A detailed description of the mechanical device, including its innovative features and first experimental results, is provided. During operation, BMI-decoded position and velocity are directly mapped onto the bipedal exoskeleton's motions, which then move the monkey's legs as the monkey remains physically passive. To meet the unique requirements of such an application, the exoskeleton's features include: high output torque with backdrivable actuation, size adjustability, and safe user-robot interface. In addition, a novel rope transmission is introduced and implemented. To test the performance of the exoskeleton, a mechanical assessment was conducted, which yielded quantifiable results for transparency, efficiency, stiffness, and tracking performance. Usage under both brain control and automated actuation demonstrates the device's capability to fulfill the demanding needs of this application. These results lay the groundwork forfurther advancement in BMI-controlled devices for primates including humans.

Brain-Computer Interfaces for Gait Rehabilitation After Stroke A Scoping Review
Mokienko O., Zisman M. A., Bobrov P. et al., American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2026 Vol. 105 No. 6 P. 555–563
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent a promising technology for restoring lower limb motor functions and gait after stroke. The application of BCIs in this field is supported by a limited number of studies. The objective of the review was to systematically and critically evaluate the current evidence on the use of BCIs for lower limb function ...

Closed-Loop Chain Linkage-Based Hand Exoskeleton: A Lightweight and Modular Solution for Hand Rehabilitation
Sulaiman S., Mustafin M., Li H. et al., , in: 10th International Conference, ICR 2025, Hanoi, Vietnam, November 10–13, 2025, Proceedings, Part II. Interactive Collaborative Robotics. (LNCS, volume 16304).: Springer, 2026. P. 105–119.
Prosthetic hands are vital assistive devices that significantly enhance quality of life for individuals with upper limb amputations, enabling them to regain autonomy and perform essential daily activities. However, many existing prosthetic solutions are hindered by high costs, excessive weight, and complex actuation systems that limit accessibility and usability. This paper introduces a novel prosthetic ...

Training with brain-machine interfaces, visuotactile feedback and assisted locomotion improves sensorimotor, visceral, and psychological signs in chronic paraplegic patients
Lebedev M., Plos One 2018 Vol. 13 No. 11
Spinal cord injury (SCI) induces severe deficiencies in sensory-motor and autonomic functions and has a significant negative impact on patients’ quality of life. There is currently no systematic rehabilitation technique assuring recovery of the neurological impairments caused by a complete SCI. Here, we report significant clinical improvement in a group of seven chronic SCI patients ...

Interfacing to the brain's motor decisions
Mirabella G., Lebedev M., Journal of Neurophysiology 2017 Vol. 117 No. 3 P. 1305–1319
It has been long known that neural activity, recorded with electrophysiological methods, contains rich information about a subject's motor intentions, sensory experiences, allocation of attention, action planning, and even abstract thoughts. All these functions have been the subject of neurophysiological investigations, with the goal of understanding how neuronal activity represents behavioral parameters, sensory inputs, and cognitive functions. The field of brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) ...
