Вербальные расистские оскорбления в современном французском обществе
The article looks at the verbal racist abuses and the attitude towards them in the contemporary French society. France is home to more than 7 million immigrants and therefore the problem of racial tolerance is rather acute and, just like in many European countries, these abuses are punishable by law. Currently the abuses on racial grounds are very strictly punished by the criminal code with 5 years in prison and a fine of up to 75 000 Euros. Although the measures are more than decisive, singling out the offenders and punishing them is a difficult task. The more notorious racial abuse cases that have made it to the media spotlight in the past three years are taken as the core for the article, the vocabulary of verbal racial invective is analyzed alongside with its effect and the measures taken in the French society to punish or avoid these abuses. Quite frequently the abuses are not expressed through the invectives included into the dictionaries of taboo words. Conceptually, the charge with racial abuse can take place even if the offender did not use verbal means, but the intention to insult or discriminate the opponent has been proved. At the same time, the majority of scandalous cases are connected to abusing the Arab immigrants. Finally, the ‘inverted’ racial intolerance is formed, whereby the French are the victims of the abuse by the immigrants.
