'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

TMS with fast and accurate electronic control: Measuring the orientation sensitivity of corticomotor pathways

Brain Stimulation. 2022.
Souza V. H., Nieminen J., Tugin S., Koponen L., Baffa O., Ilmoniemi R.

•             Adjustment of the stimulation orientation at 1° steps in submillisecond intervals.

•             Multi-coil TMS enables automated, closed-loop brain stimulation protocols.

•             The orientation sensitivity of motor responses follows a logistic function.

•             The logistic model captures neurophysiological properties of neuronal excitation.

Probing the orientation specificity of excitatory and inhibitory circuitries in the primary motor cortex with multi-channel TMS
Souza V., Nieminen J., Tugin S. et al., Clinical Neurophysiology 2025
Multi-channel TMS electronically changes the stimulus orientation in milliseconds. The effect of neuronal refractoriness, short-interval intracortical inhibition, and intracortical facilitation depends on the stimulus orientation. Maximum inhibition and facilitation with conditioning pulse at posterolateral and anteromedial orientation, respectively. ...

GABAergic and glutamatergic mechanisms of cortical excitability shape motor resonance during action observation as measured by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Ragimova A., Imanaeva M., Nieto Doval C. M. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 P. 1–15
Background: Motor resonance reflects the activation of the motor system during the observation of others’ actions and is considered a physiological marker of the human mirror neuron system (MNS). This study investigated whether the excitatory and inhibitory balance in the primary motor cortex, driven by glutamatergic and GABAergic mechanisms, is linked to the strength of ...

Novelty, Category and Orientation Tuning for Printed Characters: A Magnetoencephalography Study with Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation
Kochetkova E., Kostanian D., Martynova O. et al., Brain Topography 2026 Vol. 39 No. 4 Article 51
Letter recognition is assumed to involve several levels of analysis, including coarse tuning for category and novelty and more fine tuning for specific features, related to letter orientation. We employed an oddball fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) paradigm with magnetoencephalography (Elekta VectorView, 306 sensors) to study neural discrimination responses in the source space. Using contrasts ...

Novelty, category and orientation tuning for printed characters: A magnetoencephalography study with fast periodic visual stimulation
Kochetkova E., Sysoeva O., Martynova O. et al., / Series 2025.11.29.691313. 2025.
Letter recognition is assumed to involve several levels of analysis, including coarse tuning for category and novelty and more fine tuning, related to letter orientation. We employed an oddball fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) paradigm with magnetoencephalography (Elekta VectorView, 306 sensors) to study neural discrimination responses in the source space. Using contrasts between native letters ...

Determination of the Electric Field by Particle Tracking in a Plasma Sheath Region during Free Fall
Schmitz A., Hanstein L., Klein M. et al., Microgravity Science and Technology 2025 Vol. 37 Article 7
In this work we present an experiment in which we injected microspheres at low pressure into a capacitively coupled argon plasma chamber. The setup was located in the top point of the Einstein-Elevator drop tower in Hannover, Germany, where the microparticles reached their equilibrium position above the lower electrode during 1 g. During the fall, ...

Is There a Link Between Motor Learning and Mirror Neuron System: TMS Study
Pomelova E., Feurra M., Nikulin V. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2025 Vol. 19 Article 1650152
We observed a statistically significant decrease in reaction time during the process of learning within the SRT task and motor facilitation during action observation, thus reflecting putative mirror neuron activity. We found a significant correlation between the learning speed of the non-dominant hand and mirror neuron activation in the dominant hemisphere during the observation of ...

Базелян Э. М., Aleksandrov N., Физика плазмы 2022 Т. 48 № 7 С. 639–647
A numerical simulation of a positive streamer in long (up to 3 m) air gaps under normal conditions was performed within the 1.5D model taking into account the ionization expansion of the channel. It is shown that the average electric field in the channel and the field required to bridge the discharge gap are not ...

Termination of thunderstorm-related bursts of energetic radiation and particles by inverted intracloud and hybrid lightning discharges
Chilingarian A., Khanikyants Y., Rakov V. et al., Atmospheric Research 2020 Vol. 233 P. 104713
Recent studies of thunderstorm-related enhancements of fluxes of energetic radiation and particles at ground level suggest that removal of mid-level negative charge from the cloud by negative cloud-to-ground (-CG) lightning flashes or normal intracloud (IC) flashes serves to abruptly terminate those enhancements. However, it was not clear if the electron-accelerating electric field responsible for flux ...

Kechiev L.,

Time Course of Corticospinal Excitability and Autonomic Function Interplay during and Following Monopolar tDCS
Santarnecchi E., Feurra M., Barneschi F. et al., Frontiers in Psychiatry 2014 Vol. 5 P. 86
While polarity-specific after-effects of monopolar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on corticospinal excitability are well-documented, modulation of vital parameters due to current spread through the brainstem is still a matter of debate, raising potential concerns about its use through the general public, as well as for neurorehabilitation purposes. We monitored online and after-effects of monopolar ...

Experiments indicating acceleration of charged particles as a result of separation of solid surfaces are analyzed. As a possible mechanism of such acceleration, generation of surface charge on the separated surfaces of a cleaved ionic crystal is considered. The maximum electric field generated due to the charging of the separated surfaces and the energy of ...
