HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

Academic Degrees & Graduate Education. 2026.
Smirnov N., Terentev E., Zhuchkova S., Nikitin M.
In press

Doctoral education plays a pivotal role in the innovative social and economic development across the globe. National governments make significant efforts to increase the quantity of doctoral graduates and enhance the quality of doctoral training. This paper aims to analyse the history and effects of doctoral education reforms in post-Soviet Russia. This analysis seems important because the Russian system of doctoral education is among the top-ten largest in the world and has strong historical connections with the systems of doctoral education in other post-socialist countries. In our analysis we show that the development of doctoral education in post-Soviet Russia followed some global trends such as diversification of the doctoral student body and increase in the institutional autonomy of organizations eligible to award doctoral degrees. However, it also has some specific characteristics, such as a strong academic orientation of doctoral programs with no differentiation of academic degrees and training models, the prevalence of individual supervision models with less structured approach to the doctoral training, and the overconcentration of doctoral students at leading universities. This mixture of global trends and national specifics produces the set of main challenges for the enhancement of doctoral education: financial barriers for high-quality doctoral training, the lack of academic support for doctoral students, and insensitivity to take into account different motivations to enter doctoral programs.
