This article provides an exclusive look at the most important moments surrounding the Soviet leadership's decision to launch a military operation in Afghanistan in 1979. The author recounts his conversations with Afghan politicians, including the Vice President of the Republic of Afghanistan, Abdul Hamid Mohtat, discussing the operational situation in Afghanistan and the actions of foreign anti-regime forces. A. G. Baklanov argues for the need for a political rehabilitation of this Soviet military action, which can be seen as an attempt to preemptively strike against the emerging forces of international terrorism.
