HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

The paper analyses a problem of application of the system approach and the lifecycle approach in systems engineering. Evaluation of the main concepts of these two approaches in systems engineering practice is considered in the connection to complex technical systems development. As a result presented a competence framework for the systems engineer position in the ...

Developing a Multi-facet Abstractions Framework for Designing a New Class of Traceability Applications
Babkin E., Poletaeva T., Abdulrab H., , in: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing: Enterprise and Organizational Modelling and Simulation.Vol. 153.: Berlin: Springer, 2013. P. 115–129.
The research reported in this paper aims at introducing principally new approach to the design of traceability applications for supply network by the means of semantically consistent and conceptually aligned abstractions of business-processes, data, and software architecture. To derive needed abstractions, proposed approach uses the general principles of enterprise ontology for meta-description of business objects ...

Integrated approach to traceability data management
Abdulrab H., Itmi M., Poletaeva T. et al., , in: CEUR Workshop ProceedingsVol. 963: Emerging Topics in Business Informatics Research 2012.: Nizhny Novgorod: Higher School of Economics in Nizhny Novgorod, 2012. P. 44–53.
Globalization of trade and higher volume flows lead to the necessity of new approaches in design of traceability systems. Since containerization becomes a dominant technique in the general cargo trade and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology have already proven to be effective in traceability systems to get data about physical objects, this paper proposes an integrated approach to RFID data ...
