'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

The influence of methoxy- group position on thermal stability and properties of novel isomeric 4-[(methoxy)phenoxy] phthalonitriles and phthalocyanine complexes based on them

Dyes and Pigments. 2023. Vol. 219. Article 111600.
Erzunov D., Rassolova A., Botnar A., Tonkova S., Rumyantsev R., Maizlish V., Aleksandriskii V., Vashurin A.

Isomeric 4-[(methoxy)phenoxy]phthadinitriles were obtained and characterized in this work. The compounds showed high thermal stability, which is directly related to their structure. These features were revealed and described using X-ray diffraction analysis. For m-substituted structures during packing, the largest contribution was found from intermolecular interactions of the π-stacking type between nitrile fragments. In the packing of o-substituted analogs, this type of interaction is not realized due to geometry, and additional stabilization is realized due to the appearance of three-center intermolecular bonds between the bridging oxygen atoms of one nitrile molecule and the hydrogen atom of the nitrile fragment of another molecule. Based on the obtained phthalonitriles, novel metal complexes with tetrakis-4-[4-(o-/m-/p-methoxy)phenoxy]phthalocyanine ligands were synthesized. For the substituted phthalocyaninates obtained the structure was characterized, the spectroscopic and luminescent properties were determined, as well as the influence of the position of the methoxy-group in the peripheral fragments on them. It is shown that, on the one hand, the position of the methoxyl-group has a significant effect on the values of the fluorescence quantum yields of the compounds, and, on the other hand, has almost no effect on their fluorescence lifetimes.

Stress tensor in fundamental measure theory of hard-sphere fluids: A thermomechanical approach
Budkov Y., Kalikin N., Journal of Chemical Physics 2026 Vol. 165 No. 16 Article 164108
We derive the local pressure tensor generated by the original Rosenfeld fundamental measure theory (FMT) for hard-sphere fluids from an arbitrary infinitesimal deformation. The variation of a finite-distance FMT kernel is written via the line integrals of the local deformation gradient along the straight segment connecting its end points. The resulting symmetric pressure tensor consists ...

Conformational space of polyphenylenevinylene oligomers is systematically investigated computationally at energies relevant for room temperature dynamics in a solvent and in a solid state. Our calculations show that optimal oligomer structures are essentially planar. However, lack of a deep minimum at the planar geometry allows for large molecular deformations even at very low temperatures. At ...

Toward probing of the local electron–phonon interaction in small-molecule organic semiconductors with Raman spectroscopy
Тукачев Н. В., Nuraliev M., Parashchuk O. et al., Journal of Chemical Physics 2020 Vol. 153 No. 17 Article 174303
Electron–phonon interaction strongly affects and often limits charge transport in organic semiconductors (OSs). However, approaches to its experimental probing are still in their infancy. In this study, we probe the local electron–phonon interaction (quantified by the charge-transfer reorganization energy) in small-molecule OSs by means of Raman spectroscopy. Applying density functional theory calculations to four series ...

Тукачев Н. В., Sosorev A., Parashchuk O. et al., Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics 2021 Vol. 23 No. 29 P. 15485–15491
Dynamic disorder manifested in fluctuations of charge transfer integrals considerably hinders charge transport in high-mobility organic semiconductors. Accordingly, strategies for suppression of the dynamic disorder are highly desirable. In this study, we suggest a novel promising strategy for suppression of dynamic disorder—tuning the molecular electrostatic potential. Specifically, we show that the intensities of the low-frequency ...

Low-frequency vibrational modes in G-quadruplexes reveal the mechanical properties of nucleic acids
Тукачев Н. В., González-Jiménez M., Ramakrishnan G. et al., Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics 2021 Vol. 23 No. 23 P. 13250–13260
Low-frequency vibrations play an essential role in biomolecular processes involving DNA such as gene expression, charge transfer, drug intercalation, and DNA–protein recognition. However, understanding the vibrational basis of these mechanisms relies on theoretical models due to the lack of experimental evidence. Here we present the low-frequency vibrational spectra of G-quadruplexes (structures formed by four strands ...

A Second Glass Transition Observed in Single-Component Homogeneous Liquids Due to Intramolecular Vitrification
Тукачев Н. В., Mali G., Tassieri M. et al., Journal of the american chemical society 2023 Vol. 145 No. 48 P. 26061–26067
On supercooling a liquid, the viscosity rises rapidly until at the glass transition it vitrifies into an amorphous solid accompanied by a steep drop in the heat capacity. Therefore, a pure homogeneous liquid is not expected to display more than one glass transition. Here we show that a family of single-component homogeneous molecular liquids, titanium ...

In this study, we apply (TD)DFT and multiscale modelling to assess the reliability of these approaches for prediction of the emission properties of carbazole-triazine (Cz-TRZ) based TADF luminophores. We found that a series of hybrid and doubly hybrid functionals reproduce the experimentally observed trend ...
