There exists a considerable body of literature on the languages of early modern European diplomacy. Research has also focused on the role and use of languages at European peace congresses of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, language practices of the Åland Peace Congress remain a poorly studied topic, even though the political history of the congress has been the subject of previous research. The paper aims to address this research gap. Based on Russian and Swedish archival documents, it reviews key factors of language choice at the congress and demonstrates how the lack of translators and the origin of plenipotentiaries dictated the use of German as third neutral language of diplomatic communication.
