Oleg Voskoboynikov’s Book Published in France

Vendémiaire publishing house in Paris has issued a book by Oleg Voskoboynikov, Professor at the HSE School of History and Tenured Professor of HSE. The book is called ‘For centuries and centuries. Christian civilization of the Medieval West’ (Pour les siècles des siècles. Civilisation chrétienne de l'Occident médiéval. Paris, Vendémiaire, 2017).

This book develops and adds more detail to the ideas expressed by the same author in ‘The Thousand-year Kingdom. Review of the Western Christian Culture. 300-1300’ (Moscow, Novoe Literaturnoe Obozrenie, 2015). In both books, Christian civilization is studied as an integral phenomenon in history and culture, but not as a static ‘view of the world’ with certain dogmatic coordinates. The main author’s idea is that the Middle Ages is a civilization (culture) as dynamic, hesitating, and searching, as any other, including Europe today. The book uses written historical sources of various genres, as well as pieces of art from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and England. The book is illustrated with photos by the author. In terms of historiography, Oleg Voskoboynikov, on one hand, presented the findings made in recent year, and on the other hand, tried to combine the approaches of classic Western medievalists and Russian researchers, historians of culture, philosophy, literature, and arts.

A video comment on the book is available on the publisher’s website.
