A case of morphologically bound complementation in Abaza: an LFG analysis
P. 289-306.
Panova A.
The present paper deals with morphologically bound complementation, a type of construction where a matrix predicate and the head of its clausal complement constitute a single verb morphologically but retain their syntactic and semantic independence. I analyze one instance of this type of subordination: the construction with an element ʒəš’a ‘seem’ in Abaza (Northwest Caucasian). I discuss previous LFG analyses of morphologically bound complementation constructions and suggest that this class of constructions is a potential domain for expanding the mechanism of Lexical Sharing.

The present paper deals with morphologically bound complementation, a type of constructions where a matrix predicate and the head of its sentential complement constitute a single verb morphologically but retain their syntactic and semantic independence. This type of polypredication is discussed on the material of Abaza (< Northwest Caucasian): I consider a construction with an element ...

Morphologically bound complementation is a construction where a matrix predicate and the head of its sentential complement constitute a single verb morphologically but retain their syntactic and semantic independence. In this article I consider the main features of this type of subordination in different languages and then discuss where such morphologically and syntactically peculiar constructions ...

Как правило, объединение клауз в полипредикативных конструкциях выражается в том, что один из предикатов теряет свою синтаксическую самостоятельность. Однако существует также чрезвычайно редкий альтернативный способ интеграции главной и подчинённой клауз: объединение может произойти не на синтаксическом, а на морфологическом уровне при сохранении синтаксической самостоятельности. В данной работе показано, что примером полипредикации, сочетающей морфологическую интеграцию компонентов с их синтаксической автономностью, является абазинская ...

The paper focuses on the paths of grammaticalization of the verb of speech manaš (‘say’, ‘name’) in Eastern Mari. The converb of this verb (manən) is desemantisized, it loses the syntactic properties of the verb of speech and shifts to the category of subordinators. Successive grammaticalization steps of this marker can be observed in Modern ...

This paper provides a novel analysis of grammatical function marking in West Circassian (West Caucasian, Russia), a polysynthetic language whose syntactic features do not quite fit the standard types of polysynthesis described in the literature. We argue that there is a straightforward connection between GF status, verbal indexing, and case marking. Namely, subjects are Absolutive-marked ...

In this article we describe reflexivization strategies in Abaza (Northwest
Caucasian), a polysynthetic language characterized by consistent head
marking and morphological ergativity. Abaza features three reflexivization
strategies: (i) the specialized reflexive prefix čə- used to reflexivize the absolutive argument, (ii) doubling of person-number prefixes, used to reflexivize
indirect objects with transitive verbs, and (iii) the lexical reflexive based on
the ...

Voice onset time (VOT) is a parameter which distinguishes the way consonants are articulated . This parameter is widely used in acoustic phonetics. In particular, there are many studies of it in the languages of the world. This paper presents an analysis of VOT in the Abaza language (Northwest Caucasian). We measured the VOT of ...

This paper describes a group of derivational verbal suffixes in Abaza, a polysynthetic language belonging to the Northwest Caucasian family. For each suffix I propose a short description of its most remarkable features. In particular, I discuss the polysemy of the refactive and assertive markers and their interaction with the event structure of the verb. ...

In this paper, we discuss the challenges that we faced during the construction of a Universal Dependencies treebank for Abaza, a polysynthetic Northwest Caucasian language. We propose an alternative to the morpheme-level annotation of polysynthetic languages introduced in Park et al. (2021). Our approach aims at reducing the number of morphological features, yet providing all ...

This paper presents a survey of a new project devoted to a typologically-oriented description of Abaza. It discusses the methods used in obtaining the relevant data (an oral corpus on a par with elicitation) and some topics touched upon by the project (phonetics, passive-like constructions, nominal structures, information structure and interrogatives, sentential complementation). ...

This volume assembles contributions addressing clausal complementation across the entire South Slavic territory. The main focus is on particular aspects of complementation, covering the contemporary standard languages as well as older stages and/or non-standard varieties and the impact of language contact, primarily with non-Slavic languages. Presenting in-depth studies, they thus contribute to the overarching collective ...

Phasal polarity (PhP) is a cross-linguistic category which includes such values as ᴀʟʀᴇᴀᴅʏ, ɴᴏᴛ ʏᴇᴛ, sᴛɪʟʟ and ɴᴏ ʟᴏɴɢᴇʀ. This paper discusses morphologically bound markers of phasal polarity in Abaza, a polysynthetic Northwest Caucasian language. We show that the Abaza PhP affixes ‑χ’a ‘already’, -s (+ negation) ‘not yet’, -rḳʷa ‘still’ and -χ (+ negation) ...
