Barsukova S., Korobkova A. Социология рынков. WP4. Высшая школа экономики, 2014. No. 4.
The paper focuses on debates about Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that have unfolded in Russia's print media. The authors highlight the initial arguments of supporters and opponents of this accession, the ways in which those arguments are presentedin the media, and the differences in the standpoints of the business, governmental and expert communities. The authors further analyze changes in the content of this discussion and its discursive space following Russia's accession to the WTO.

The paper focused on an important dimension of contemporary international economy: the “Suitcase/Shuttle trade.” More specifically, it has examined a microcosm of the new economic geography created through the “shuttle” trade between former Soviet republics and Turkey between 1991 and 2002. The project had three main goals. One was to provide a profile of both the Turkish and Russian traders so as to acquire insights into the dynamics of shuttle trade. Second, to find out how informal networks operate and what kind of regulatory challenges do they create for the governments? Third, the authors were interested in how the contagion effect operates in the “real economy.” To address the trends of shuttle business development authors used a series of non

The paper presents economic approach to the analysis of marriage and divorce. Based on the RLMS data from 1995—2003 we carry out an empirical analysis of the factors that influence the probability of marriage and wedding age (such as salary, education, health conditions, bad habits and other factors). Various linkages among the characteristics of recently married spouses are investigated. Among them are their nationality, religion, earnings, etc.

Global retailers entered Russia’s domestic market at the edge of the 2000s bringing about fundamental shifts in the competitive environment. Domestic retailers start struggling for investment resources and elaborate new business strategies. They demonstrate a great capacity for intensive structural and institutional isomorphism trying to imitate trading organizational forms and trading technologies of the leading international sellers before the latter get established in the market. Despite their fantastic growth rates, still it is unclear, which part of the leading Russian sellers would survive or loose their business and be pushed out of the market. A major data source comes from two series of in'depth interviews conducted with the owners and top managers of 38 companies that joined two newly emerged Russian business associations RATEC and ACORT.

Fundamental changes have occurred in the competitive environment in the Russian retailing market at the beginning of 2000s. New Russian retailing chains are expanding to come in place of independent stores and open-air markets. However, they face a serious challenge. The first transnational retailers have already entered the domestic market. Some more of them are expected to invest huge money into the Russian economy. A re$division of markets is on the agenda for the next 3—4 years. What does it matter for the Russian leading sellers? Will they survive or get out of the market as it happened with local retailing chains in the Eastern Europe? What kind of business strategies are elaborated to meet the challenge of the new competitive environment? These are issues for investigation in this paper. A major data source comes from two series of in-depth interviews conducted with the owners and top managers of 38 companies, which are members of two business associations RATEC and ACORT.

This paper considers the problem of vertical gender segregation. We evaluate the scale of vertical segregation in Russia and other countries. The paper discusses reasons for vertical segregation, arising from differences in human capital of men and women and out of institutions importance as well. On the basis of RLMS data covering 1994—2003 we test the influence of gender differences in family duties and human capital on vertical segregation. Using the original database on top7manager appointments we analyze what factors influence women being appointed top7managers.

This study is aimed at the analysis of the reproductive performance of the market for dissertation services in Russia. In the paper empirical findings are presented based on our indepth interviews with actors in this market. Particularly, we describe the mechanism of the reproduction of professional community in Ph.D. and post=doctoral institutions in Russia in 1991—2004. We proceed with discovering historical and social causes of the reproduction of such a market for dissertation services, depict social characteristics and motivation of the key actors in the market (i.e. buyers, suppliers, and brokers). We suggest a typology of actors' actions, including their selection of partners, price making policy, forms of control over agreements [enforcement of agreements], as well as ways of the reproduction of relationships in the market for dissertation services.
