Agency employment is a form of non-standard forms of employment. It is developing dynamically during last years in many countries around the world and encompasses a variety of professions and jobs in all sectors of the economy. One of the reasons of developing agency employment is the demand for it from enterprises. Demand from enterprises for employment of an agent is influenced factors that are inextricably linked with the activities of the enterprises themselves. The paper gives a theoretical justification, considers the mechanisms and results of empirical studies which explain the impact of major factors on agency employment of the enterprise.

The paper considers microeconomic returns of computer skills and discusses the effects resulting from qualitative shifts in human capital. The research is based on the Russian longitudinal monitoring survey (RLMS) for the years 2000—2005. Empirical part of the paper analyses influence of computer skills on the effectiveness of job search, probability to be employed and wage and determines the factors of complexity and variety of computer skills acquired. The paper has found that there is microeconomic return on computer skills and abilities to work with a computer increase wages and the probability to be employed, to find a job. The second important result is that return on computer skills is both “technological” and “selective” and occurred to be a bonus on higher general skills of an individuals.

Employers incur costs while fulfilling the requirements of employment protection legislation in the processes of hiring and firing. The paper contains a review of the main theoretical models, empirical results, and methodological issues concerning the impact of these costs on employers’ practices in hiring, firing, training and remuneration. Overall, if there is a wage flexibility, then employment protection does not influence significantly on hiring and firing policies and external labor demand adjustment to shocks. But if wages are rigid, then stringent employment protection results in the reduction of hiring and firing rates, changes in personnel selection criteria, types of labour contracts, dismissal procedures, and, in some cases, it may lead to the growth of wages and human capital investments of firms.

The paper contains a review of the main theoretical models, methodological issues and cross-country empirical results concerning the impact of employment protection legislation on employment and unemployment. It is widely accepted that strict employment protection (i.e. constraints on hiring and firing) is responsible for labour market inflexibility and high and persistent unemployment in European countries in comparison with the USA. At the same time there is no theoretical or robust empirical evidence that employment protection directly influence unemployment, although there are much more findings that it decreases employment-to-population ratio in developed countries. One of the possible reasons for these inconsistent results is shortcomings of cross-country analysis which should be taken into account in political recommendations.

The paper is devoted to the role of specific human capital in Russian economy. Using data from the This paper considers the economic returns to health in the Russian labor market. Empirical analysis the impact of health on labor supply and wages is provided on the base of RLMS data for 1994-2004. The problem of measuring health and different of subjective and objective health characteristics are discussed. Using the principal component method we construct an integral health indicator on the base of different objective health characteristics. The problem of health endogeneity is concerned. The results of estimation show considerable negative influence of poor health and relatively less in absolute value positive influence of good health on employment. We also have found a positive impact of good health on earnings.

The article is devoted to the impact of university quality on graduates’ wages. We defined the quality of the university according to an average applicant’s Unifi ed State Exam (USE) enrollment rate combining data from Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS HSE) and HSE Monitoring of the quality of enrollment in Russian universities (2011–2013). Authors combined information on university, graduates’ wages, socio-demographic characteristics with data on USE enrollment rates. Using means of descriptive and regression analysis authors evaluated economic return to university quality measured by USE enrollment rate. We discovered that graduates of high-quality universities have stable wage premium comparing with ordinary university graduates after controlling on academic, socio-demographic and labor market factors. One additional point at university USE enrollment rate provides graduates’ with 1,9–2% wage premium. Earnings of graduates’ of most selective and quality universities are 31% higher than earnings of graduates of the low-quality universities.

This paper examines the effects of alcohol consumption on wages in the Russian labor market. The influence of alcohol use on wages has been estimated utilizing data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) for 2000—2005. At estimation of models it has been used three various measures of alcohol consumption. Heckman’s two-stage estimation procedure has been used for correction of self-selection bias. The results of estimation show that at some specifications moderate consumption of alcohol is positively connected with wages for women. For men U-shaped dependence does not prove to be true in all models.

he paper provides an empirical analysis aimed to estimate the impact of disability status on employment and hours worked in Russia. We use the data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey for 2004–2014 and apply propensity score matching. Our results show that disability status has a significant effect on labor supply of the disabled even when health problems are thoroughly controlled for. Disability status is associated with a 31–33 percent decrease in employment probability. This effect is stable over time and across specifications. At the same time, we do not find a consistent impact of disability status on hours worked. Our findings suggest that economic and institutional factors related to disability status influence the labor market entrance and to a lesser extent subsequent work arrangements.

The research has made on the base of personnel records of the industrial firm which operates in Siberia (2002–2006). It allows us to investigate intra-firm labor mobility, promotions and their effect on employees’ wages. The paper is focused on the analysis of magnitude and directions of intra-firm workers’ mobility and determinants of their career inside the firm. Special attention is given to interaction between wages dynamics and promotions in the framework of this internal labor market. We have found confirmations for some hypotheses of the internal labor market theory, for instance, about existence of firm’s hierarchy, about affiliation of the low-levels’ job titles rather with external than with internal labor market, about correlation between wages and job titles. The positive return to vertical promotion was also found.

In this paper we study the sources of gender segregation on the within-firm level and its effect on gender wage gap. In contrast to numerous of papers devoted to gender segregation, we use unique personnel data from one of Russian industrial firm for the period from 2002 to 2006. We show that generation and fastening of segregated employment structures can be explained, firstly, by initial job assignments and, secondly, by gender differences in promotion paths of male and female workers. Estimations of the gender wage gap let us conclude that it is largely driven by gender segregation between positions and levels rather than by workers’ characteristics.

The paper, based on the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) data for 2003—2007, examines the sector of the actual and potential minimum wage (MW) workers, and reveals characteristics of their employment, compared with a core group of employees on Russian labor market. In addition, the study estimates significant factors of MW earning on the labor demand side, e.g. characteristics of employers, offering employment at the minimum rate of pay. To determine the segment of potential earners of MW the factors that increase the probability of being in a group of such workers are estimated. The results indicate the effects produced by the institute of the MW in Russia, as well as the susceptibility of the labor market to changes in its rates MW.
