IGITI researchers Julia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov Сontribute to a Сollective Monograph

Leading researchers from IGITI (Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities) have contributed to a collective monograph titled EroicaMente Vico. Medicina, vita civile e ragione poetica nel 'De Mente Heroica', which is dedicated to the legacy of Giambattista Vico.

Vico's speech On the Heroic Mind (De Mente Heroica) was published in the ‘Ars Inveniendi’ series. Experts from Italy, Brazil and Russia discussed the speech during their lectures. This was preceded a high school essay contest Premio Vico 2017, which was dedicated to  Giambattista Vico's legacy. In the book, Vico’s comparatively small speech is prefaced with commentaries of leading scholars who touch upon multiple subjects raised by Vico in his work. The Neapolitan philosopher attempts to answer the question as to whether or not a hero and heroism could actually exist in the 18th century European society, and if so, how the "modern" heroism could be defined. The IGITI researchers’ articles address the reception of the ideas proposed by 16th century French lawyers in Vico's works (Ivanova, J., The Heroic Mind of the Legal Counsel. The Transcendence of Jus Strictum and the History of Liberty in the Vico's Legal Philosophy), as well as the gender aspects of heroism, which were examined by Vico within the context of medical thought of that era (Sokolov, P., The Heroic Medicine and the 'Woman-Hero' Aporia. From 'On the Heroic Mind' to 'the New Science').
