Book chapter

Braille à la russe. Vom Gefühl und Ungefühl der Schrift

P. 35-57.

The motif of blindness is of particular importance in Conceptualist art and literature because it not only expresses allegorically the Conceptualists' striving for the "dematerialization of art", but also concerns forms of performative and writing practice. In the case of the Moscow Conceptual artist Yuri Albert, for example, this regards to "performing blindness" in various genres: texts displayed in Braille, performances in museums with blindfolds for the audience, drawing of self-portraits with blindfolds. The essay examines media-theoretical implications of these artistic experiments.
