Конструкция потрудитесь + инфинитив: от вежливости до хамства

С. 254-263.

The paper deals with the development of the pragmatics of the Russian construction potrudites’ (lit. ‘take the effort’) + infinitive. It is shown that in the 18th and the first half of the 19th century this construction was used as a polite request between the people of the same status, and also as an invitation. With time it becomes less polite: it might be used as a proposal to somebody to do something on their own, from the middle of the 19th century it was used as a request similar to a demand in the speech of the policemen, officials and service staff, and from the 1890s it got the modern pragmatics of a cold and rather tough demand in the official communication.
