The Moscow English Club and the Public Sphere in Early Nineteenth-Century Russia

P. 220-237.
Translator: А. Иосад.

The lifestyle of the Moscow English Club and the modes of sociability accepted there after 1812 are reconstructed in Mikhail Velizhev's contribution. Modeled on a borrowed pattern, the club, however, failed and indeed never aspired to reproduce the richness and diversity of British club life. On the contrary, the meaning of the Moscow English Club rested on a sense of uniqueness and exclusivity that gave the noble elite feelings of security and stability in a world of social transformation.
