Восток в письмах испанских католических миссионеров в эпоху Филиппа II / The Oriental World in the Reports of the Spanish Catholic Missionaries in the Age of Philip II
The Age of Discovery and the European expansion to the East started the cultural interaction between the peoples of the West and the East. Japan is one of the most notable examples 67 of this interaction. The Spanish Jesuit Francis Xavier was the first to introduce Christianity into Japan. He was followed by the Spanish Augustinians and Franciscans. Some missionaries lived in Japan for many years, others stayed only for a few months. Their letters and reports to Europe gave a picture of the Japanese life as seen through the eyes of the Europeans, whether they adhered or not to the stereotypical European views of non-Western people, and shaped the Spanish understanding of Japan during the second half of the 16th century.
