This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Conceptual Structures, ICCS 2009, which took place in Moscow, Russia, on July 26-31, 2009.
The 18 papers presented together with 5 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from approximately 50 submissions. Originally centered around research on knowledge representation and reasoning with conceptual graphs, over the years ICCS has broadened its scope to include innovations from a wider range of theories and related practices, among them other forms of graph-based formalisms like RDF or existential graphs, formal concept analysis, semantic Web technologies, ontologies, concept mapping and more.
For the first time after D. H. Müller’s pioneering studies of the 1900s, a large body of folklore texts in Soqotri becomes available to the Semitological scholarship. The language is spoken by ca. 100.000 people inhabiting the island Soqotra (Gulf of Aden, Yemen). Soqotri is among the most archaic Semitic languages spoken today, whereas the oral literature of the islanders is a mine of deeply original motifs and plots. Texts appear in transcription, English and Arabic translations, and an Arabic-based native script. Philological annotations deal with grammatical, lexical and literary features, as well as realia. The Glossary accumulates all words attested in the volume. The Plates provide a glimpse into the fascinating landscapes of the island and the traditional lifestyle of its inhabitants.
The goals of research on conceptual metaphor in discourse are at present remarkably multifaceted, from describing specific social, pragmatic, rhetorical, aesthetic, and discursive functions in real discourse data, through assessing metaphor entrenchment in the cultural and conceptual system, to identification methods as well as criteria for metaphorical mapping description and classification. The volume the reader is about to explore provides a broad panorama of perspectives tackling diverse aspects of metaphor analysis, including a wide range of topics such as the levels of source domain knowledge configuration, new Metaphor analysis in discourse. Introduction 7 target domain knowledge, conscious usage, metaphor identification procedures, communicative functions, linguistic metaphor, visual modes of metaphorical expression, corpus processing, trans-modal metaphor, among others. One of the assets of this collective work consists in showing how the scrutiny of metaphorical connections in multimodal discourse reveals the conceptual nature of metaphorical thinking. The book is organized in three parts, each one focussing on certain aspects of metaphor analysis in discourse. The first part emphasizes the description and characterization of metaphorical knowledge. The chapters offer a view on knowledge configurations like image schemas, frames, scenarios and domains that configure particular kinds of discourse and knowledge. The second part puts the stress on communicative aspects, particularly on the analysis of author/speaker intentionality and the tools to measure intention and effect in metaphor usage. Finally, the third block in the volume delves into the intricacies of disclosing metaphorical codes in non-linguistic modes of semiosis, be it cartoons, film, or other visual media.

Was ist das für eine Lust an der Lektüre, um derentwillen der Literaturliebhaber immer wieder zur Literatur greift? Worin bestünde für den Leser die Attraktivität der Literatur, wenn nicht eben darin, dass sie alle seine menschlichen Vermögen in Anspruch nimmt die sinnlichen genauso wie die intellektuellen, die ethischen und die ästhetischen? Ausgerechnet die klassische Wirkungsästhetik, die doch eigentlich den Leser aus seinem Schattendasein heraus- und in die Literaturtheorie hatte einführen wollen, handelt von dem Wirkungspotential des literarischen Textes, und nicht davon, wie der Leser mit allen seinen Vermögen auf dieses Wirkungspotential anspricht. In Absehung von und zugleich in Berücksichtigung der Wirkungsästhetik konkretisiert Iris Bäcker die Rede vom Leser in kulturhistorischer und literaturdidaktischer Perspektive.

The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students of the Higher School of Economics. Its main objective is developing academic skills, namely enriching students’ academic vocabulary, which is an integral part of their professional education. Being able to use appropriate academic vocabulary in writing is essential for this kind of activity.
Developing Academic Literacy correlates with the book Academic Vocabulary in Use by Michael McCarthy and Felicity O’Dell (Cambridge University Press, 2008) and can be used as a source of additional exercises to practice topics covered there. Out of 50 units presented in this book we have chosen 45 which are of particular importance for the context of the National Research University. However, each unit of the present book contains not only practical exercises but also a theoretical part explaining the use of studied lexical units. Thus, the book can be used independently. As each unit covers a different lexical topic, the units can be studied in any order.
The tasks are aimed at both recognizing the lexis (on its own and within short contexts) and using it. The exercises comprise such tasks as matching words with their definitions, synonyms, antonyms, completing sentences with appropriate words, matching parts of sentences. Special attention is paid to collocations in academic context. The illustrative examples have mostly been taken from the British National Corpus, the Corpus of Contemporary American English and monolingual English dictionaries.
The book can be used both in class and individually. The exercises are provided with the Key, which allows students to check their answers, and, thus, makes the book suitable for self-study purposes. The book is provided with the Resource bank, which consists of abstracts from academic articles. All the abstracts contain lexical units studied in the book and can be used as a source of additional exercises by a teacher or self-check material by a student.
The book is to be used as a supplement to an Upper Intermediate course in General English aiming to develop academic skills of reading and writing around the topics and vocabulary of 5 Units in the course book «Upstream Upper Intermediate» by Bob Obee –Virginia Evans (1, 2, 3, 6 and 9). The book examines two main topics related to the culture of the Spanish Republican exile in the Soviet Union: cultural centers of Spaniards in the USSR and the participation of Spanish exilées in Soviet cultural projects such as the review 'La Literatura Internacional' (later, Literatura Soviética) and the Spanish department of the publishing house Progress, in the period from 1937 until the 70ties. It's the first general study of the culture of the Spanish community in the Soviet Union based on the documents from the Spanish and Russian archives, news papers and journals, and testimonies of the Spanish exilées in the USSR.

Human communication is basically the exchange of information. How can this be realized? Each communicant proceeds from a subjective perception of an objective reality; however in order to exchange information relating to this reality communicants are obliged to coordinate their perceptions. Each of us entertains personal experiences based on individual impressions and associations. But communication presupposes the presence of a common experience and the possibility of the coordination of subjective perceptions. It is presumed that communicants share common experiences: this seems to be the natural premise of communication.
How is this possible? How can I be certain, for example, that my interlocutor understands the words in the same way I do? How can we correlate our understanding? It seems obvious that the necessary condition of communication is an agreement between the communicants. But how can this agreement be reached? Where is the initial point of the coordination of individual experience of different persons?
The present book deals with this and related questions. Special attention is given to the role of deixis in the process of communication and to the mechanisms of linguistic comprehension.
