Рождение смысла: концептуальные основания семантики английских прилагательных
This book introduces a method for modelling cognitive foundation of the semantics of English adjectives. The study focuses on three adjectival categories, in particular, “Mental qualities of human beings”, “Moral qualities of human beings” and “Characteristics of human beings’ appearance”. The results of the study show that the human mind peculiarity to interpret the world via antinomies rules the interpretation of qualities as well and the conceptual bases of these adjectival categories are formed by archetypical conceptual oppositions, such as light – darkness, life – death, motion – stillness, friend – foe and so forth. It is these oppositions that predetermine the evaluative meaning of an adjective. While forming the semantics of English adjectives, these oppositions demonstrate certain properties, in particular, inverse axiological value, the ability to integrate with each other, high or low rate of language representation.
The book addresses linguists, undergraduates and postgraduates who study for a degree in Translation Studies or Philology.
