Nikolai Charushin's memoirs of his experience as a member of the revolutionary populist movement in Russia are familiar to historians, but A Generation of Revolutionaries provides a broader and more engaging look at the lives and relationships beyond these memoirs. It shows how, after years of incarceration, Charushin and friends thrived in Siberian exile, raising children and contributing to science and culture there. While Charushin's memoirs end with his return to european Russia, this sweeping biography follows this group as they engaged in Russia fin de siecle society, took part in the Russian revolution, and struggled in its aftermath. A Generation of Revolutionaries provides vibrant and deeply personal insights into the turbulent history of Russia from the Great Reforms to the era of Stalinism and beyond. In doing so, it tells the story of a remarkable circle of friends whose lives balanced love, family, and career with exile, imprisonment, and revolution.
This paper introduces the concept of form of life, socially shaped and shared meaning structures of actors situated in material contexts, as a tool for the cultural-sociological analysis of biographies and life trajectories. Following the principles of structural hermeneutics, such an analysis of life-forms treats the interview text as manifestation of a deeper holistic meaning structure, embodied in narratives, binaries and metaphors, without suppressing the contradictions and tensions inherent in every form of life. Finally, the empirical applicability of our approach is illustrated with examples from the qualitative strand of a broader longitudinal panel study as well as an in-depth case study.
The period of the 1990s is relatively poorly studied and is in a situation of media and ideological stereotypes. This article is devoted to return the discourse of the “nineties” in the analytical channel. It is devoted to the analysis of biographical trajectories and the worldview of “teenagers of perestroika”, those who were 14–16 years old during the period of historical change in 1989–1991 with an emphasis on the transition to individualistic thinking and a focus on personal and business success. All participants in the qualitative research were graduates of the Penza school of young managers. This school was engaged in teaching knowledge and ideologies of a market economy, marketing and business of Soviet schoolchildren of the early 1990s. The article discusses the history of the Penza school of young managers, analyzes its curriculum and the concept of working with students in conjunction with the task of educating “business people” for the new Russia and the ideology of “carnegieism”. Special attention is paid to the reception by students of the school of young managers of Dale Carnegie’s ideas and the ideology of “carnegieism”, who were in the center of the training programs not only of this, but of other schools of young managers of the early 1990s. The article has a reflection on the worldview evolution of students of the school of young managers under the influence of Carnegie’s works. Special attention is paid to reflections on the place of the “teenagers of perestroika” in modern Russia, taking into account the research of this group, in which it is called the “lost generation” or the “failed generation”. Apart from the public sphere and the norms set by society, the private sphere plays an important role in the lives of the disabled, including the personal experience of disability at a micro level: in their families, everyday routines and romantic relationships. In this chapter, issues of family structure are considered using a narrative analysis of interviews with women who use wheelchairs. Various cultural, social, economic and political determinants effect the formation of certain types of family structure and attitudes towards family life. At the same time, they interrelate with biographical factors that reinforce or weaken the limits of freedom and private life. Using narrative analysis, I demonstrate what role family plays in constructing the identity of a person with a disability, and how family members act as coauthors of individual biographies. This can be seen in those dilemmas of family life associated with the feelings, sexuality and emotional stability at the micro-level of the life experience and identification of women with disabilities.
