Мостовая В. Г. Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории. 2020. № 22.

‘Philosopher’, ‘philologist’, ‘cultural historian’ – these names are separated by commas in the title of the present paper, suggesting that philosophical treatises and works on philology and cultural history pertain each to its own domain and can be analyzed separately. This is not completely true, or even not true, at all. In particular, when speaking of G.S.Knabe, one should rather join these words by equality signs or hyphens. His works, whether dedicated to philosophy, semiotics, everyday life history, to literature or music, discuss so wide a variety of issues that it is hardly appropriate to subsume them under any narrow label. Knabe’s memoires and his published correspondence show all these issues to be a part of his everyday reflections and concerns. Knabe’s method born out of his innermost experience was to immerse in today’s history and to expand the limits of the notion of culture from ‘exalted’ to ‘routine’, while strictly adhering to provable judgements and relying on lively communication with colleagues and friends.

Никольский И. М. Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории. 2017. Т. 16. С. 73-106.

This work is the first commented Russian translation of the Latin text of Satisfaction (Satisfactio), the work by Blossius Aemilius Dracontius, poet, lawyer, and rhetor who lived in the second half of the 5th century in Carthage, at that moment the capital of Vandal Africa. Author wrote this text while being under arrest. This piece of fiction, addressed to the king of Vandals, is actually a versified appeal for pardon. Simultaneously the author constructs an image of ideal ruler, in accordance with which the addressee of his epistle should act – noting important virtues and giving examples from the past. The text is worthy of attention in context of the problems of evolution of the political ideology in the epoch of transitional period between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. As a supplement a translation of the revised version of Dracontius’ work produced in the 7th century by Eugene II, the Archbishop of Toledo (646–657) is added.

Алмазова Н. С. Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории. 2019. Т. ХХ. С. 264-287.

The article gives an analysis of the concept underlying a series of works (fundamental university manuals) written in the last pre-revolutionary decades by the prominent Russian historian R.Yu. Vipper (1859—1954). These works sum up the material on all the three major sections of the ancient history – the Ancient Orient and the evolutionary counterparts of its societies in the Aegean world, pre-Hellenistic Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome before the Principate. Symptomatically, Vipper’s major interest was addressed to the stage of ancient history, at which the state formations were represented by small non-hierarchic communities. This stage fell at the very start of history at the Ancient Orient; at Ancient Greece and Rome it came to its end, respectively, with the emergence of the Hellenistic monarchies and of the Principate. According to Vipper, the non-hierarchic communities were the makers of civilization at the start of history and possessed a great creative capacity; he assessed negatively their transformation into hierarchic structures with vast territories but believed that the modern time came to be in a way a renaissance of non-hierarchic structures at a certain new level. This series of works by R.Yu. Vipper can be considered unique as an essay of a conceptual generalization for the entire ancient history by a single scholar.

Белоусов А. В., Сапрыкин С. Ю. Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории. 2018. Т. 18. С. 246-269.

The article is a kind of answer to V.P. Yaylenko’s critical notes on the publication of three epigraphic monuments from the settlement Artesian in East Crimea. This publication was made by the authors of this article (in cooperation with N.I. Vinokourov). While accepting some critics by Yaylenko, both authors still leave their former conclusions and arguments as the most positive for reconstructing the argued inscriptions. Moreover, they use this article as a place for their own critics of V.P. Yaylenko’s position, concerning reading, interpretation and commentary of the inscriptions, particularly in terms of reconstructing personal names and individual terminology. The authors (A.V. Belousov) give some new arguments in favour of the former interpretation of graffito on inner side of a pottery fragment as ληκάσα<ς> μοῦ̣ Δ̣/ό{δο}λης. The same is done in regard to the graffito on the other side of the fragment and the reading of sepulchral inscription on grave-stone Σωσ{τ}ίβι(ος) Διωνυσίου / καὶ ὑοὶ Δισακος / καὶ Παδαφοῦ(ς) / χαίρετε (S.Yu. Saprykin). They also put forward some conclusions against V.P. Yaylenko’s ideas to take the name “Sostibius” as originated from Asia Minor as well as against his theory to see in one of its components –tibius- a personal Asia Minor name Τίβειος > Τίβης (Τέβης) > Τίβις (the more so that the form Τίβις is still unattested in Greek and Latin inscriptions). This name is evidenced only as single-formed and has never been used in double-formed components of individual names.

Орехов Б. В. Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории. 2020. Т. XXI. С. 282-296.

The paper deals with the context of the new translation of the Iliad, made by a philologist A.I. Lyubzhin. A distinctive feature of this text is its meter, the translation is made by an Alexandrine verse. This metric solution was natural for the 18th century, but in the 19th century, to translate the Homeric texts, overcoming the established tradition, the Russian hexameter was chosen. A.I. Lyubzhin translated the Iliad from the place where the poet of the 18th century E.I. Kostrov stopped. The main purpose of the article is to compare the texts of Kostrov and Lyubzhin and to establish how they differ. As a tool, Burrows’ Delta method was chosen, which uses the distribution of the most frequent words to compare texts in the corpus. In addition to the texts of Kostrov and Lyubzhin, the “Russiada” by M.M. Kheraskov, the translation of A. Palitsyn’s “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign”, the “Iliad” translations by N.I. Gnedich and V.A. Zhukovsky were involved in the study. Delta showed that all fragmented texts are clustered together, that means that Delta effectively attributes the authorship and the stylistic homogeneity of the texts. However, contrary to expectations, Delta divided into different clusters not texts written in Alexandrine verse, and texts written in hexameters, but texts belonging to the tradition of the 18th century, and texts belonging to the tradition of the 19th century. The translation of A.I. Lyubzhin was in the same cluster with the poets of the Pushkin era. The new translator does not repeat the manner of the XVIII century, but speaks a more modern language.

Шумилин М. В. Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории. 2018. Т. 18. С. 154-172.

In Propertius 2.29a the poet is captured by a group of Cupids identified so by a reader from indirect indications only and described in a way suggesting that they were not recognized by the narrator. It appears that Cupids’ behavior is modeled on the behavior of some real persons. The paper is dedicated to the problem of what persons are meant. It has been suggested that they are to be identified with professional street brigands (M. Rothstein) or with policemen (G. Luck), or that the boys are in fact slaves of the poet’s beloved who are disguised as Cupids (Th. Birt); dominant in the contemporary commentaries is F. Cairns’ interpretation, suggesting that fugitiuarii, ancient bounty hunters, are meant as the model for Cupids. Given the popularity of seruitium amoris imagery in Roman love elegy, it is probably inevitable that Cupids of this elegy should be somehow seen as fugitiuarii, but Cairns’ theory does not solve all the problems connected with the text. I argue that, while eventually readers and the narrator are supposed to realize that Cupids in fact acted as fugitiuarii, earlier in the poem the actions of Cupids are rather modeled on the behavior of groups of (generally noble) youths committing outrages for fun during night. I point to parallels to difficult places of Propertius’ elegy in the sources describing behavior of such groups. In the course of my survey I propose a conjecture to Apul. Met. 2.18.4 (tibi uero fortunae splendor inuidiam, contemptus etiam peregrinationis poterit adferre).
