Importance. The planned transition to a digital economy is impossible without adequate legal and staffing support. The deficit of lawyers able to accompany activities of economic entities in a digital economy is set to increase. This, in turn, suggests the need for new approaches and a new vision of higher legal education that meets new requirements. Objectives. We identify issues relevant to training lawyers to conduct their work in a digital economy framework. Then we discuss possible ways in which higher legal education may develop in transition to a new technological order. Methods. Research involves methods of the systems approach, analysis and synthesis, modeling, methods of psychodiagnostics, and comparative longitudinal research. Results. We propose a systematic approach to the training of lawyers set to operate in a digital economy. Further, we draw up a list of professional competencies desired in lawyers providing support on digital platforms. Finally, we consider areas to improve the quality of legal training. Conclusions. Research demonstrates the need for changes in federal state educational standards and educational programs so as to form professional competencies and foster psychological readiness in law school graduates qualified to work in a digital context
