Молчание Абеляра. Письмо Петра Достопочтенного к Элоизе
This paper proposes a cultural-historical analysis and a translation of the letter the abbot of Cluny Peter the Venerable sent to Heloise, bride of Abaelard, shortly after her husband’s death. This letter has a great importance in the abbot’s œuvre, as well as in the history of the so called Trostliteratur of Middle Ages, from Boethius to the best pens of the XIIth century Renaissance. This consolation is also an admonition and a portrait of Heloise, as famous for her erudition as her late husband, but she did not leave treatises to witness it. The letter also throws light on the Abaelard’s last years: by using means of an epitaph, Peter draws a new portrait of a «philosopher of Christ» which partly contrasts with the self-portrait in the Historia calamitatum mearum and with the controversial image we get from Bernard of Clairvaux and William of Saint-Thierry.
