This chapter examines the religious life trajectory of a famous Russian literary scholar and professor Stepan Shevyrev. Using unpublished sources, I trace his intellectual development which was influenced by Friedrich Schlegel and Franz von Baader. The artcile shows how Shevyrev objected to Schlegel's religious literary criticims in the 1830s and conversed to the Orthodox literary theory in the 1840s under the influence of Franz von Baader's philosophy.

People who were born in the USSR in the 1970s and were in their thirties at the time of my fieldwork in 2009–11, questioned their adulthood in ways that are different from other parts of the world. Whereas many others are finding adulthood “unattainable” or “elusive” (see Durham’s introduction to this volume), perestroika teens wonder whether adulthood had somehow passed them by. Given the intersection of culture, history, and personal experiences, many find their adulthood fleeting, squeezed between being “too young” and “already old.” The maturation of perestroika teens was already questionable because lingering Soviet ideals glamorized childhood and youth as the locus of moral agency, contrasted with the “unmarked” (see introduction), but vaguely traumatic and morally compromised by routine, world of adults. This departure from a “happy Soviet childhood” was further complicated by the disappointments of the 1990s when none of the various social and moral strategies helped them build a good foundation for a professional career. In 2010, they often felt they belonged “neither here, nor there”; in other words, split between Soviet and post-Soviet moral orders, and between their glamorized childhood and questionable adulthood. A growing realization that being just a few years older or younger would have changed their life opportunities and the way they experienced adulthood reinforced the disappointment. Finally, pro-natalist policies and discourses that dominated the public sphere in Russia in the 2000s helped to seal the “has-been, already old” sentiment among these men and women.

Learning useful representations is a key ingredient to the success of modern ma- chine learning. Currently, representation learning mostly relies on embedding data into Euclidean space. However, recent work has shown that data in some domains is better modeled by non-euclidean metric spaces, and inappropriate geometry can result in inferior performance. In this paper, we aim to eliminate the inductive bias imposed by the embedding space geometry. Namely, we propose to map data into more general non-vector metric spaces: a weighted graph with a shortest path distance. By design, such graphs can model arbitrary geometry with a proper configuration of edges and weights. Our main contribution is PRODIGE: a method that learns a weighted graph representation of data end-to-end by gradient descent. Greater generality and fewer model assumptions make PRODIGE more powerful than existing embedding-based approaches. We confirm the superiority of our method via extensive experiments on a wide range of tasks, including classification, compression, and collaborative filtering.

Restriction-modification systems (RMS) are prokaryotic tools against invasion of foreign DNAs into cells [1]. They reduce horizontal gene transfer, thus stimulating microbial biodiversity. Usually, they consist of a restriction endonuclease (REase) and a modification DNA methyltransferase (MTase) enzyme recognising the same short 4-8 nucleotide sequence. MTase is responsible for methyl group transfer to adenine or cytosine nucleotides within the target sequence, thus preventing its hydrolysis by cognate REase.
