The importance of knowledge and innovation in modern economies justifies the increasing interest that scholars are taking in studying knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). The literature repeatedly stresses the role of knowledge intensive business services as a provider of knowledge and information to other businesses and organizations promoting more dynamic and innovative development of the clients, thereby positively influence their competitive ability. Development of the sector in the region can be considered by regional authorities as one of the ways of innovative development in order to maintain the competitiveness of the region.
The objective of this paper is to identify the factors that obstruct the development of knowledge intensive business services sector in Russia. The study is based on a unique empirical data from mass surveys of more than 650 Russian producers of KIBS. The main research method is the factor analysis.
A comparative analysis of the factor structures of knowledge intensive business services producers from central and peripheral regions shows that barriers identified by producers of KIBS from central regions are more related to the process of providing this type of service, its features, and obstacles, denoted by the producers from the peripheral regions are more related to the fact that the sector is at an early stage of development. All respondents agreed that an important obstacle for knowledge intensive business services development in Russia is market factor that includes lack of certain level of demand and unfavorable economic situation.
