Seeing an Image – Being-in-the-World: the Interconnections Between Visuality, Spatiality, and Agency in Philosophical Hermeneutics
Problemos. 2013. No. 84. P. 170-183.
Ilya Inishev, Yuliya Biedash
The article is dedicated to the revelation of heuristic potential of hermeneutic image conception within discussions on contemporary visual culture. H.-G. Gadamer analyses image as visual, spatial and social phenomenon expanding and transforming thereby the accustomed notion of iconic experience. The image is not primarily an aesthetics’ and art criticism’s research object, but social phenomenon, which has to be considered in its real and imagined character as well as in its interrelations with the lived world structures. Blurring boundaries between art and life in his image theory Gadamer opens up an array of opportunities for the analysis of iconic practices in all their variety: from science to theater.

A well-known trilemma faces the interpretation of Kant’s theory of affection, namely whether the objects that affect us are empirical, noumenal or both. I argue that, according to Kant, the things that affect us and cause representations in us are not empirical objects. I articulate what I call the Causal Power Argument, according to which ...

Traditionally phenomenology was considered as the philosophical movement that pays no attention to the problem of medium understood as the material mediator of thinking process. Admittedly, this media-indifference of phenomenology results from its subjective-idealistic orientation. Acknowledging the truth of this retrospective interpretation the alternative look at the problem of relationship between phenomenology and media studies ...

Are the pure intuitions of space and time, for Kant, dependent upon the understanding's activity? This paper defends the recently popular Self-Affection Thesis (SAT): namely, that the pure intuitions require an activity of self-affection—an influence of the understanding on the inner sense. Two systematic objections to this thesis have been raised: The Independence objection claims ...
